The Sand Pyramids are located in the broader area of Daničići, accessible by car via the old road connecting Foča and Miljevina. The largest and deepest craters featuring these formations are situated near the villages of Donje Selo, Sijerice, and Staništa, at an elevation of 650 – 700 m a.s.l.
These pyramids are a true natural phenomenon, born from soil erosion and shaped by the relentless forces of rain, snow, wind, and sun. While they do not follow a strict pyramidal geometry, these furrowed sand pillars rise from broad bases and taper toward their peaks. They represent an extraordinary geomorphological rarity that continues to captivate both geologists and nature enthusiasts.
The process of erosion is constant. These formations do not disappear; instead, they continue to grow and evolve, carving out new craters and pillars over time. They are at their most beautiful when illuminated by the sun, which highlights a rich palette of earth tones—ranging from deep browns and oranges to vibrant yellows and reds.
The most accessible pyramids are located immediately beside the old Foča – Miljevina road, near the village of Staništa.
For the safety of visitors, a dedicated viewing platform and protective fencing have been installed above the main crater.Photographing and exploring the pyramids can be hazardous. The “eaves” or edges above the craters are often undermined by erosion and are not visible from the top edge. Extreme caution is advised, not only at this primary site but throughout the entire pyramid complex.
Work is expected to continue on the protection of the entire complex. Plans include the development of new pedestrian trails that will connect the largest craters, allowing for a more comprehensive and safer exploration of the site.
